A38 voted "world's best bar" by Lonely Planet

A barge floating on the Danube -- the world's best bar? Bar-trawlers asked by the Lonely Planet guide think so.

The A38, a decommissioned Ukrainian stone hauler anchored off a wharf on the Buda side of Hungary's capital, has been crowned "best bar of the world" in an internet vote organised by the publisher.

A38 has been in business since April 2003,and has attracted legends in jazz, world music, blues and rock ever since.

In the "100 great bars of the world" competition held since November, A38 picked up 13,300 votes, ahead of De Witte Aap of Rotterdam and another Budapest favourite, the Szimpla Kert.

"This victory a is a great honour for us. All the more so because the competition was organised by the arguably most popular guidebook publisher of the world," A38 press official and programme organiser Sandor Kozlov said.
